United Airlines and Delta Airlines Discussing Merger

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Associated Press has learned that United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have been discussing a combination between the nation's second- and third-largest carriers.

The combined company would keep the United name and its corporate headquarters in Chicago.

That's according to an official with knowledge of the talks. (The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to speak publicly.)

The official says there's a sense of urgency in the talks, which have been going on for some time.

The exact financial details of the transaction being discussed aren't clear. But the talks involve Delta's Atlanta hub being an operational center for the two carriers.

A United spokesperson didn't immediately return a call seeking comment today, while a Delta spokeswoman declined to comment
