The sweet taste of success may actually have a downside for makers of the popular sugar substitute Splenda.

The makers of the no-calorie sweetener Splenda are having trouble keeping up with the growing demand. The world's only manufacturer of sucralose says the company won't take on new United States customers for at least another year or until it can double production at its Alabama plant.

Splenda has won a lot of fans with its sugar-like sweetness and stability during baking. The product now dominates the $337 million U.S. retail market for sugar substitutes, beating out equal.

Splenda's popularity has also been linked to the recent surge in non-sugar diets such as Atkins and South Beach.
