Early Tuesday morning the Rockford Fire Department was responding to a fully engulfed garage fire at 719 North Winnebago Street.
When they arrived, the fire had already spread to the adjacent two-family home. One person was sleeping upstairs, but the popping of the fire woke him up and he escaped uninjured.
The garage was destroyed and damage is estimated at around $30,000 for the neighboring house, but what's raising suspicion is the fact that the Fire Department responded to another house fire just two hours prior to this blaze right around the corner. It was another garage fire at 810 Haskell Street.
The Fire Department says leaves and sticks were set on fire next to the garage, but the flames were extinguished before they completely penetrated the wall.
The Fire Department says they're looking into several leads at this time and trying to determine if the two fires are indeed related.
A few miles away on Rockford's southwest side the Fire Department was battling a blaze at 1217 Seminary Tuesday afternoon. Authorities say the fire started on the living room carpet.
The Fire Department says the vacant home was probably being used by homeless individuals. Cigarette butts were scattered around the room. The fire isn't considered suspicious, but the cause is still under investigation.
