A woman left her car running and unlocked while she ran inside Haskell Elementary School around noon.
When she came back outside, the car and her three-year-old son were gone. A few minutes later, witnesses spotted a man drop off the car nearby at Grant Avenue and Napolean.
The suspect ran away and the child got out of the car unharmed. A woman took care of the child until police arrived.
Rockford Deputy Chief Dominic Isparro says leaving a child in a car unlocked is dangerous and should not be done.
The suspect is a black male. He was wearing a red coat and a white stripe and was last seen running away from Grant Avenue and Napolean a little after noon.
He stole a white station wagon, which has been recovered.
