Gubernatorial candidate and Attorney General Jim Ryan filed suit Tuesday to protect death row inmates' constitutional and legal rights.
Ryan filed two actions in the Sangamon County Circuit Court against the prisoner review board and its members.
The suit says that the board's plan to conduct clemency hearings for 157 death row inmates in four days is a violation of the inmates' rights. Ryan says this is a denial of fundamental fairness and dignity to victims.
Gov. George Ryan put a stop to all executions in Illinois because of concerns that innocent people were being put to death. A commission appointed by Ryan has recommended that 85 changes be made to the system.
