Monday night, Rockford city alderman approved a plan to install and maintain fiber optic connections. By the end of the year, six city sites will have this high speed communication. This is just the first phase in getting what is called "Rocknet" a fiber optic loop that will connect the city's government, businesses and citizens.
Fiber optics is said to hold more data than any other connection. In the United States, about 500 cities have this infrastructure. Monday night, Rockford city aldrerman approved $600,000 to first help the city make this connection internally and then help our community’s telecommunications.
The first phase will have the city's fiber optic connections up and running by the end of the year.
