The number of inmates peaked last month at 114 more inmates than the jail is rated for. On September 20th, the jail population was 591, despite its listed capacity of 477. It's prompting fears the county won't be able to handle increasing demand. On some nights, more than 50 inmates have slept on the floor.
Wisconsin Department of Corrections jail inspector Bob Lee wrote
in a recent inspection report that the county should move quickly
to build an expansion of the jail. The cost would range from 30 to 38 million dollars to add 439 beds and upgrade existing facilities.
