Illinois' democratic senator, Dick Durbin, hit the senate floor to call for changes to unemployment benefits.
In his speech, Durbin asked the senate to extend unemployment benefits for workers in Illinois and across the nation. In Illinois, the unemployment rate reached 6.2 percent in August, a 12 percent increase over last year.
More than 100,000 workers in Illinois have exhausted their benefits and 13-week extended benefits. Last week, Durbin and other senators unveiled new legislation called the emergency unemployment compensation act to extend benefits again.
