Stephen Colbert to Run for President

The host of Comedy Central's "Colbert Report" announced his candidacy for president Tuesday night.

Colbert, whose shtick is mocking conservatives by pretending to be one himself, made the announcement as red, white and blue balloons fell around him.

Colbert had recently spoofed the coyness of would-be presidential candidates by refusing to disclose whether he would seek the country's highest office.

His recent best-seller, "I Am American (And So Can You!)" afforded him the opportunity to mock the now-standard approach to a White House run, complete with a high-profile book tour.

Colbert says he plans to run in his native South Carolina, "and South Carolina alone." The state holds one of the key early primaries.

The comedian says he's going to run as both a Democrat and a Republican. That way, he says, he can lose twice.
