The Illinois Department of Public Health says the 200 deaths in 2003 were up from 190 in 2002, which was a record low. The highest number of on-the-job deaths was 262 in 1996.

The Health Department says nearly a third of the deaths in 2003 were transportation related, such as car crashes or pedestrians struck by vehicles. Violent acts were the second leading cause of workplace deaths with a total of 43.

Nearly 93 percent of the on-the-job deaths were men.
