Based on an enrollment report released Tuesday, applications at Northern Illinois University were up 12 percent this school year.
After facing nearly $40 million in budget cuts in the last three years, the school was forced to match student numbers to available resources.
The report says enrollment is down 440 students, or 1.7 percent from the same time last year.
The largest decrease, 298 freshmen, reflects efforts to limit the steady growth in new student numbers.
