Budget Cuts

Gov. George Ryan is proposing another round of budget cuts to shave $502 million from state spending. Ryan's cuts include eliminating funding for some state prisons and college scholarships for students in their fifth year of school.

Ryan wants to close the Sheridan Correctional Center and keep closed a new prison in Thomson. The House also rejected Ryan’s veto of a bill prohibiting the privatizing food service and commissaries in state prisons.

If the veto survives in the senate, it will be against the law to privatize the prison services. Ryan claims he could save $30 million a year through privatization. But the legislature questions that number and says the idea poses security problems in prisons.
