ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Early Wednesday morning firefighters were called to battle a blaze at a McDonalds on Rockford south side.

The fire broke out just before 3:30 a.m. at 4403 Harrison Avenue.

Employees noticed the smell of smoke in the kitchen and started to have equipment issues. A customer in the drive-thru also saw smoke coming out of the roof and told employees, that's when they called 911 and evacuated the restaurant.

Firefighters say, the fire started in the attic of the building and at times the blaze was so heavy they had to pull out crews. It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control and they were on the scene for an additional two hours to completely put out the fire.

Firefighters say, the restaurant suffered a lot of damage and will be closed a long time for repairs.

After investigation it appears the fire started in a concealed ceiling space and was burning for some time until it was noticed. Investigators say, a electrical problem ignited the blaze.

The estimated cost of damages is around $600,000 and no one was injured in the fire.

AJ - I was not directing that toward you but rather making a broader statement that the situation could have turned out worse, thats all. As I said before I am glad no one was injured and I am glad to hear that they will be helped out.

This was a corporate owned McDonalds. They are trying to find hours for employees at this Harrison location, but obviously other people work at those locations. @ Rockfordian - Why would I feel better if there was a loss of life over loss of employment? I don't even get why you made that statement. I'm glad my brother wasn't scheduled to work that night. @ Anonymous - What?
