Local Manufacturing Project Developing New Technologies, and Jobs?

At the Legislative Reception, the Eiger Lab Development Project stood front and center.

The lab showed off its new metal cutting and metal joining technologies, a project developed right in Rockford.

Where traditional manufacturing jobs in both the U.S. and Rockford have trouble competing with overseas wages, leaders are hopeful sharing the new ideas can give Rockford an advantage in job creation.

With the city having lost 13,000 manufacturing jobs since 2001, developers and manufacturers say the research could again put Rockford at the center of innovation.

"We hope this research will show people a lot of new manufacturing technologies, a lot of processes that will allow them to new businesses and new processes to their current product that can't be readily produced overseas," Dick Johnson, manufacturing consultant, said.
