WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wisconsin Congressman, Paul Ryan calls the new budget deal in Congress modest, but says it moves a fiscally challenged government "in the right direction."

Ryan has told "CBS This Morning" the deal he brokered with Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington state was the best possible deal at a time of a "divided government."

Ryan says that agreement the will restore $63 billion in mandatory spending cuts.

Ryan also says he was "a little caught off guard" by the harsh criticism from conservative groups. House Speaker John Boehner angrily denounced two conservative groups, saying anybody who believes in deficit reduction should support the deal.

Ryan says "nobody got everything they wanted, but we advanced our principles."
