ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A lot of names in the running for Winnebago County Sheriff and some local leaders are choosing which candidates to stand by.

State Rep. Chuck Jefferson along with a group of Rockford area democrats officially announced they're backing Bob Springer for Winnebago County Sheriff.

Jefferson says Springer is the most qualified candidate based on his experience in law enforcement and because Springer promises to diversify the department by hiring more women and minorities.

"As he wants to incorporate more women in the department... he wants to incorporate more minorities which I think is the way it should be. As long as he's reaching out trying to make a difference I'm willing to work with Bob and make sure that we're doing everything we can to be inclusive," Jefferson said.

Recently Former Rockford Alderman Victory Bell endorsed Glenn Heidenrike. The other three democratic candidates are Jerry Schroeder, Bob Redman, and Randal Olsen. On the GOP there's Gary Caruana and Frank Pobjecky.
