Former Dixon Official Apologizes for Thefts

DIXON, Ill. (AP) -- A former Dixon city official says he's "truly sorry" after he resigned in the wake of reports he used a city-issued credit card for personal expenses.

The Telegraph in Dixon reports that it received a letter late Thursday from former City Engineer Shawn Ortgiesen. In the letter Ortgiesen says words can't express his apologies for "failing to fulfill" his obligations. He says he made "poor personal decisions" and that he is "deeply sorry for breaking the trust that was given" to him.

Officials say Ortgiesen charged $13,521.14 in personal expenses from April 2007 to last month. He paid has back what he owed the city.

Former Dixon comptroller Rita Crundwell is serving a prison sentence for stealing about $53 million from the northern Illinois city.
