The network's announcement makes official what was already clear: "Fringe" premiered last September to become only one of a handful of new series to qualify as a hit.

The mystery thriller stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and John Noble in a quest against science-based attacks waged on the world.

J.J. Abrams is a co-creator and executive producer of the show. His other credits include the TV series "Lost" and "Alias." He is also the director of the much-awaited new "Star Trek" film.
