HOUSTON (AP) -- Doctors in Texas are using an experimental technique in their continuing effort to save the life of entertainer Emilio Navaira.
The Grammy-winning Tejano (teh-HAH'-noh) singer suffered brain injuries in the weekend crash of his band's tour bus. He's in a medically induced coma after surgery to remove a blood clot.
Doctors have also lowered his body temperature in an effort to stave off further swelling of his brain. The singer -- known to his fans simply as Emilio -- remains in critical condition today.
He was behind the wheel of the tour bus before dawn Sunday when it slammed into an interchange barrier on a Houston-area freeway. He was tossed through the windshield.
Early police reports show Navaira was not licensed to drive the 26,000-pound bus. An investigation continues.
Six people were on the bus. Only the band's bass player remained hospitalized yesterday. The others were treated for cuts and bruises and released.
