SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Utah company offering online a sock monkey named for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says it didn't mean to anger anyone with a "cute and cuddly" toy that some are calling racist.

An official statement issued today by Sock Obama LLC says the toy was based on a "casual and affectionate observation" that there was an association between the Illinois senator and the toy.

But the president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People calls the toy "pure racism at its extreme."

I don't see anything wrong with making a monkey (a derogatory description of black people for years) sock puppets and naming it after a positive well educated black man running for President.. That's not racist..and if you believe that I have Nicole Brown-Simpson blade sharpeners for sale.

Its pretty Sad all the time everything that is made these days is "considered racist". It seems if your not the caucasian race then its called racist. Get a life people. Be Proud of who you are whatever race you are and quit putting the blame on everyone else for your race. I'll be glad when Mccain Wins Presidency. How could it be racist anyways if Obama is black and white? Unless he's not proud of both races hes from.

as a swing voter and someone currently open to obama and mccain.. i am sick and tried of the double standards for white and black folks.. one side gets offended when you breath the other side can be trashed with no mercy or any backlash.. are you open minded enough to figure out what you just read.. ying and yang some good can come out of this... wonder if jessie and al sharpton will be on cnn and morning shows for this one.. where is Rodney King.. cant we all just get along..

I really have always thought that all of the sock monkeys look kind of racist...they remind you of the blackface carichatures of the old days...i'm surprised that no one ever brought this up here in Rockford, with ys supposedly being the "sock monkey capital"...i've never really liked them...but ive always thought to never buy one and therefore not to let it bother me...to each his own though...by the way, i dont think an "obsession with being unracist" qualifies you as a racist...i think it just qualifies you as being over-sensitive...and as a black man i agree that the NAACP can be guilty of that from time to time...but with all the undercover racism that does go on under the radar that you aren't meant to see (because making it blatant isn't as politically acceptable as it used to be), someone does have to be an advocate from equality, and i'd rather have the NAACP having my back than Al Sharpton! Sometimes even when a claim seems excessive, the benefit of the doubt is appreciated!

It seems to me the "National Association for the Advancement of Colored People" is racist. It's unfortunate that anything involved with Obama is going to be labeled racist, but the ones so obsessed with being "unracist" are the ones who keep bringing it up, and are therefore, the racists. Could it possibly, POSSIBLY be that someone thought the toy was endearing?? Could it POSSIBLY be they have an admiration for Obama and that's why there is no McCain dedication?? How is this racists anyway, when Obama is half white??? Yeah, it's obvious who the racists are. They even have their own little label. It's people like you who are going to ruin it for Obama. You should be proud he is a presidential nominee, but instead you are creating an even bigger hatred of your own kind.
