WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama says if elected president he won't require that his appointees to the Joint Chiefs of Staff support allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

The Illinois Democrat favors repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays, which was instituted during the Clinton administration. But he says his priority for the Joint Chiefs will be that they make decisions to strengthen the military and keep the country safe, not their position on the policy.

Obama made his comments in an interview with The Advocate, a gay news magazine.

He called "don't ask, don't tell" a "counterproductive strategy."

Obama also says he's interested in ensuring that same-sex couples in civil unions get federal benefits.

When are politicians, and other decision making people going to learn the meaning of the word PRIORITIES? Our state is Billions in debt and yet our city (Sterling)is asking for $700,000 to build a walking path! We just blew over a million on a walking bridge across the river. Since when does a walking path become more important than someone's health or a school's survival? Doesn't anyone realize this money could be spent on more important things such as the schools, homeless shelters, heath care, or even paying down the state's debt? We have plenty of parks, walking paths, & sport facilities. The maintenance on what we already have is taxing people enough. I think voters need to put people in office who know what Priorities means and who will stop increasing taxes. This begins at the city level & goes on up the ladder. Unfortunately, low income people don't have much chance of getting elected to any office and can't teach the rich, elected officials what's really important.

I remember when Bill Clinton passed dont ask dont tell. Gays were mostly in the closet then, see what happiness they have now being able to be the way they were born? I think Obama intends to throw gays under the bus with everyone else. He should not be trusted. He has turned on everyone in one way or another through words or his ineffectual mannerism to not act at all. I personally know a lot of women who have found their gayness in the service. Hes ignorant to think there isnt alot of very brave people protecting our country right now. What does sexuallity have to do with if you do your job competently or not. He needs to stick with what he knows best racial ethics. Look at a Clinton campaign and you see they feel most comfortable with her of the 3 candidates. She is for all the people!
