(AP) -- Elgin-based School District U-46, the state's second-largest, has outlined nearly 1,100 potential cuts, including 732 teaching positions.
District officials told the more than 700 people who attended Monday's school board meeting that the district is facing a $44 million budget gap and they had little choice but to prepare for cuts.
The district, which serves more than 40,000 students from 11 communities, is also preparing for larger class sizes and fewer class offerings for students, as well as closing of Woodland Heights Early Learning Center in Streamwood.
