ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) Winnebago won its sixth regional championship in a row with a 69-61 win over Rockford Christian Friday night.
The Indians found themselves down by as much as 14 points in the second half, but used their defense to fight back.
"We're coming back to practice on Monday, we're not going home and we're not turning these in," said senior Kenzell Jones. "We've got a mission and that's to get down to state and we're taking it one spot at a time and one game at a time. That starts tonight with one possession and that's defense and that's what brought us back."
"On defense in the first half we didn't execute very well and the second half we buckled down," said senior Andrew Morrissey. "We played great defense, Malik [Marshall]'s a great player and he got his buckets but ultimately we locked them down."
"Coming into this game, we knew it wasn't going to be easy," said senior Ty Waller. "We knew the last time we beat them we kind of beat them bad, but this is regional time on their home court and everybody is going to fight to the death. It was good competition. They fought hard and we fought hard. It just feels good to get that win and move on."
Bago will meet Alleman Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Bureau Valley Sectional semifinals.
