Rockford, Ill. (WIFR) It all started with 16 of the area's top high school basketball teams to see who can claim the title of summer's best in the East varsity league, and in the end Winnebago came out on top 60-55 over Auburn.
Auburn and Winnebago went head-to-head in the championship game Tuesday night at East High School, but between Ty Waller driving into the hoop and 6'8" Andrew Morrissey dominating the boards, the Knights couldn't stop the Indians, who secured the East Summer League trophy with the 60-55 win.
"We've been playing all summer and we've been struggling off and on and we really put it together in this tournament," said Joe Murphy, head coach of Winnebago's varsity basketball team. "The fact that we've got the big guy Andrew inside helps a lot, too."
"A long time ago, you never played hardly any summer games, so juniors came into the season as true juniors with not much experience," Murphy said. "It really helps now that we play these games in the summer, because now a junior comes in, they're almost like a senior... they've adjusted to varsity speed, and that really helps your team out."
