Rockford, Ill. (WIFR) From coaching legend Misty Opat of Rock Valley's Women's Basketball team, to the rising young boxing champion and Auburn senior Angel Martinez, a full line-up of Rockford sports stars came together Thursday night to share the story behind their paths to success.
Headlined by UFC #6 Light Heavyweight fighter and Rockton-native Corey Anderson, the RACVB hosted "Sport Stories" at Veteran's Memorial Hall Thursday night in downtown Rockford. The guest panel included Opat, Martinez, as well as fellow Auburn-grad and NBA point guard for the Toronto Raptors, Fred VanVleet. The all-star panel took questions from the audience and talked about their experiences working towards achieving success in Rockford.
"Everybody sitting up here has made mistakes and veered off the path a little bit, and it's never too late," Opat said. "If it's something that's important enough to you and you really want to do it, there's people out there that will help you and lead the way if it's important enough."
Something echoed by the rest of the panel.
"It just proves that, it's cliche, but hard work pays off, and not just hard work but extra hard work," Martinez said. "A lot of people when they do things, they try to do their best, but it's about that extra work. Just show them that they can do it, anybody can do it, you just have to put in the work."
