Rockton,Ill. (WIFR) The 2017 Winnebago County Amateur was sure to highlight the area's top golfers and bring some tough competition, but absolutely no one saw coming the way the tournament would unfold.
After advancing to the Championship on Sunday, Danny Gorman finished with a 68, a two-day total of 134. Not far behind was Brian Silvers, who birdied 6 holes on the back 9 to finish with a 63, tying the course-record and also totaling a 134, forcing a playoff with Gorman.
In a sudden death match-up, Gorman and Silvers played the first hole, where Silvers made par and Gorman made a birdie putt. Gorman defeated Silvers to be the 2017 Winnebago County Amateur Champion, notching his third straight local tournament title.
"I've been playing with Danny for about 10 years, and Danny knows I love him, I told him before we started you can have the trophy, I got 63 you win, congratulations," said Silvers. "We came out, we hit it in the fairways, we hit them on the greens, so his putt went in and mine peaked, and it just didn't go in."
The win for Gorman also comes on the same day as his 22nd birthday, and enjoyed having his family on the course to cheer him on and celebrate.
"It's definitely given me some more confidence, I feel like when I tee it up, I have a chance, which is something that I was lacking in the previous seasons," said Gorman. "So it definitely just keeps me moving forward that I can get that fourth, that fifth here soon so it's added a lot of confidence and momentum for sure."
