Sterling, Ill. (WIFR) After a 1A battle Wednesday night in Sterling, Keith and Durand took the Sectional Championship game all the way to three-sets to determine who would take the title.
The Cougars' Zoe Nunez helped lead the team to the 25-20 win in the first game, with the Bulldogs' bouncing back thanks to Kaite Asche to win 25-18 in the second set.
It all boiled down to the third and final set, with Marissa Kelsey and Abby Erickson taking their final earned point before Keith's hit went long on the match point, meaning Durand won it 25-19 to take their first Sectional title since 1992.
"I cant say how excited I am, overjoyed for these girls because they really put in the time and the effort and they are so talented. I cant say enough good stuff about them," said Molly Kelsey, Durand's head coach.
"It means the world because we came out here and worked so hard to get to this point so it feels amazing," said Kaite Asche, Durand senior. "We just came out here and knew we had to play hard and knew what we had to do to win. We had to be quick and fast and just beat them at that."
The Bulldogs will face Sciota West Prairie Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the Varna 1A Super-Sectional.
