Dedmond to pull double-duty as Freeport football coach

The Freeport School Board approved the hiring of Anthony Dedmond Tuesday night as the next Pretzels head football coach.

Dedmond has spent the last 13 seasons as Freeport's wrestling coach and will continue with both programs for the 2018-2019 school year.

"Wrestling and football go hand-in-hand," said Dedmond. "I'm looking to promote the programs so more people can get involved."

Dedmond spent six years as the middle school head coach and one year with the freshman team.

The job opened up in December after Aaron Wichman stepped down following seven seasons at the helm.

The Pretzels have not had a winning season since 2004, which is also the year of the team's last playoff victory.

"I'm excited," Dedmond said. "You have to surround yourself with a great support staff. We have some great assistant coaches that will allow me to just coach. I'm looking forward to it."
