Dakota wrestling hungry to take back title

Dakota, Ill. (WIFR) Dakota showed their determination Wednesday night when they defeated the Lena-Stockton co-op in their conference dual 36-33.

"Conference is conference, but the Regional is the big test, that's what everybody wants to win," said Dakota wrestling head coach Pete Alber. "Conference is nice, but it's going to be tough all the way around."

Senior wrestler Maverick McPeek helped lead that charge in the 220-pound weight-class with a win by fall. After taking third place at the state finals last year, McPeek said he is set on ending his high school career with a first-place finish.

"It just builds my confidence even more, when I'm wrestling I like to be confident in my shots in getting takedowns and getting turns," McPeek said. " I know we're always working hard in the wrestling room, our coaches have been telling us, you've got to keep working hard, you can't escape that. Just be hungry."

Dakota is currently ranked 7th in the state in class 1A, with senior McPeek ranked at number one in the 220-pound weight class.
