Brunner opens basketball camp at Aquin

Freeport native Sophie Brunner has had a whirlwind of a basketball career since graduating from Aquin in 2013, but she has not forgotten about where she came from and now she's giving back to her community.

With some help along the way, the former Lady Bulldog created the Sophie Brunner Basketball Academy.

The camp makes three stops this summer with the first Wednesday morning back at her old stomping grounds.

Brunner spent some time in the WNBA last summer in Phoenix and San Antonio and now she's playing overseas in Italy.

However, Brunner believes the one day in Freeport is not enough of a "thank you" to give back to the Pretzel City.

"When you come from a small school and you go cross country to school, you think that maybe you might lose some support here and there," said Brunner. "That's kind of how it goes as life goes on, but everyone stuck with me and if not, I've gotten more support. I can't thank our community enough and I really enjoy the love that they've been able to give me. I think it's my turn to give back to the community and touch the younger lives like I've been touched growing up and just do what I can do for them."

The camp will return June 27-29 at Eastland and July 9-11 at Stockton.
