Belvidere promotes Wecker to head coach

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) -- Belvidere searched for the last two months looking for a new head football coach, but when administration came to a final decision, they did not have to stray too far from home.

The Bucs made the promotion official today of Darin Wecker to head coach.

Wecker spent last season working with the offensive line and as co-offensive coordinator and in 2015, he was with Guilford's defensive line and was the defensive coordinator.

Wecker says when he was with the Vikings, he acted as the team's strength and conditioning coach and hopes to expand that program in his new role with the Bucs.

"Unfortunately, we don't have a strength and conditioning program or a class in place at the school but I'm really eager to meet with the other head coaches and try to develop something that we can use year round for all of our sports programs," said Wecker. "It's important that we're unified and working together. We've got to build the Buc Pride back up and it's not just going to be a football thing or a basketball thing. It's going to be a unified program for all of our sports here."

Wecker is tasked with turning around a program which has not won a playoff game since 2007.

Wecker also spent six years as an assistant football and wrestling coach at Hononegah, which is where he attended high school.
