Woman scammed out of $2,000, police remind public about scammers

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) -- A Freeport woman loses $2,000 after she was told she owed the IRS.

The scammer even used spoofing technology so "Freeport Police" appeared on the victim's caller ID.

Authorities are reminding the public that no law enforcement or government agency will ever call you to collect money and they will never ask us to send money through gift cards.
