ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Winnebago County Animal Services (WCAS) says it's seeing an influx of applications ahead of the free pet adoption event next week.
Clear the Shelters is a nationwide campaign on Saturday, Aug. 18 to raise awareness of adopting versus buying pets. All adoption fees are waived during the event.
WCAS Adoption Coordinator Donna Apgar says she's receiving more applications than usual as people learn about the campaign.
This is the second year that Winnebago County is participating.
Apgar urges people to apply in advance. She says those who are pre-approved ahead of time will have first pick.
All adoptions include a free wellness exam, spay or neuter, microchip, vaccinations and rabies registration tag.
People need a state-issued photo ID to complete the adoption.
The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 4517 N. Main St. in Rockford.
