WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County Health Department says in addition to six mosquito pools that have tested positive for West Nile Virus, they have seen positive cases in one person and two birds.
So far this summer, the CDC reports Illinois has had 14 cases of West Nile Virus compared to just over 500 in the United States.
Director of Environment Health, Todd Marshall, says "Recent floods have increased the number of mosquitoes in our community. However, West Nile Virus is not transmitted by this type of mosquito."
The health department expects transmission of the virus to decrease throughout the area after we have had a few hard frosts.
