DEERFIELD, Ill (WIFR) -- Walgreens is stocking Narcan nasal spray to combat drug abuse.

As part of its comprehensive national plan to fight an epidemic, Walgreens will sell the FDA-approved nasal spray in all of its pharmacies nationwide. The medication can be used in the event of an overdose to reverse the effects of opioid drugs, which includes some prescription painkillers and heroin.

Narcan is a nasal form of naloxone which was approved by the FDA in 1971.

Last year Walgreens said they'd make an effort to make naloxone available without prescription which now includes 45 states.
