United Way 2-1-1 helping residents during winter

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – United Way of Rock River Valley reminds everyone to take precautions against exposure to cold weather.

Residents can call 2-1-1 or text COLD to 51555 for a list of regional warming centers and emergency shelters in Boone, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson and Winnebago counties.

United Way 2-1-1 operators are ready to respond to incoming calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for winter weather related resources.

Trained call specialists quickly assist the callers’ needs and refers them to the help they seek.

The 2-1-1 phone system launched in August 2012 and offers free information and referrals on a number of services including health resources, elderly care, utility assistance, job training programs, and financial literacy.

All calls are confidential and the 2-1-1 network supports several languages including Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
