Two deputies injured in retail theft arrest

MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WIFR) -- Winnebago County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Target Store on N. Alpine Rd, in Machesney Park around 1:15 p.m. Friday for a call of a Retail Theft in Progress.

A Deputy located the suspect, 21-year-old Evan Christo of Rockford, in the parking lot. The Deputy attempted to detain Christo but he resisted, broke free and began running through the parking lot. He got into a vehicle and began fighting with the Deputy and responding back up Officer. The Officer deployed a Taser on Christo but he tried to remove the wire from the Taser.

Christo was able to start the vehicle and began moving forward. Deputies eventually were able to get him out of the vehicle and onto the ground. Christo was taken into custody after a prolonged struggle.

The initial responding Deputy was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the arrest. He was treated and released. The second Deputy was treated at a local clinic for injuries and released.

Christo was taken to a local hospital for injuries he received while fighting with Deputies. He was released after treatment and lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.

Christo has been charged with Retail Theft, Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Possession of a Hypodermic Needle and Resisting Arrest.
