ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Some changes are coming to Rockford’s River Front including a new addition that may attract more families.

Ground is broken for a more than $600,000 children’s exploration station along the Rock River Recreation Path. The new kid friendly area will have a spot for kids under the age of five as well as a sensory garden and a water play area. The Rockford Park District Foundation says the new addition is the perfect way to bring more families to the River.

"If you think about it this area, there's a lot of families that come down to the bike path and visit the conservatory, this is going to be a play area where now children can come and play mostly between the ages of 2 and 5,” says Lori Berkes-Nelson, Director of the Rockford Park District Foundation.

The Kiwanis Club of Rockford donated $125,000 to make the play area a reality as a way to celebrate their 100th anniversary.
