ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Americans are expected to spend a total of $682 billion this year on holiday decorations and gifts. Each person is expected to spend more than $960 this year on their families, and sometimes it's easy to overspend.
Savant Captial Management financial advisor Jake Loescher suggests we create a budget and a plan. He says it's never too early to plan out who we need to shop for and how much we want to spend.
He also suggests we don't let big sales or days like Black Friday or Cyber Monday get in the way of our budget. Finally Loescher says bring along a spouse or trusted friend to help us stick to our budget and not overspend.
"It's important to have that plan because if you don't you end up making a lot of impulse buying decisions, which can sometimes be a detriment when it comes to your own personal finances," Loescher says.
The National Retail Federation says because Christmas is on a Monday this year that gives shoppers an opportunity to spend an estimated $27 billion more than last year.
