Sheriff's Office confirms layoff of 80 employees

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department says it plans to lay off all reserve deputies working in the courthouse by the end of October.

Deputy Chief Mike Schultze says ten patrol deputies will now do security at the Winnebago County Courthouse instead of those reserve deputies. Schultze says at least 64 reserve deputies will be laid off by October 20. Six deputies in training will also be laid off. Ten corrections deputies are also being laid off.

This comes after the Winnebago County Board approved the 2018 budget earlier this month, which includes a $4.3 million dollar cut to the sheriff’s department. The 80 layoffs are part of the proposed nearly 100 cuts to the sheriff's office.
