ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- While it doesn't quite feel like kayaking weather yet, Rocktown Adventures is encouraging people to get out on the water and train for the upcoming season.
Today students learned different paddle strokes and what to do if their kayak tips over. Classes will be offered once a month.
Instructors recommend being careful how far we are from shore. They say we shouldn't start to kayak any further than the distance we are able to swim back to shore.
Rocktown Adventures also offers intro to kayaking and open pool classes.
"There is more to kayaking than just putting a paddle in the water and pulling it back and learning a few things in a half an hour, you'll be amazed at how much knowledge you'll gain and that'll lead you to feeling comfortable and having a feeling of safety as you go in the water, so I strongly suggest some basic instruction, and it might allay some theories you have of trying the sport, then," said Rocktown Adventures General Manager Kevin Versino.
Rocktown's first intro to kayaking class will be on Memorial Day weekend.
