150 children had an early Christmas this morning at Rockford Police Department's annual Shop with a Cop. The winners get $150 vouchers to spend on Christmas gifts and some essentials. The only catch is they have to do the shopping with a police officer.
Target hosted the event and gave a 15 percent discount to all the winning children. Officers say it not only gives them an opportunity to help kids in need. But it also shows young members of the community that officers truly have their best interest in mind.
"It bridges the gap, ya know? Its all about community policing. We get to meet with all these different families, and its a positive interaction with the youth. I mean that's gonna be the future of Rockford is the youth, and if we can start positive interactions with them now, maybe they wont decide to go down the wrong path later," says Jason Doban, the Co-Leader of Shop With a Cop.
The event broke records with 62 officers participating and 75 volunteers from target and the community.
