Rockford man arrested after fleeing from police

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A mom worried about her kid’s safety catches the moments after a police chase through her neighborhood that ended with the suspects’ car breaking down.

Crimes are still happening but suspects are getting arrested. It's the one thing that gives Heather Vecchione comfort after this frightening sight outside her home.

"The front ends tires are gone, so they caught him. One less criminal on the street," Vecchione is heard in the live video stream she took on Facebook.

Vecchione says her son heard the sirens around 9pm Sunday and she came outside to find the road blocked by Rockford Police and a suspect being arrested.

"Our first worry was is there somebody running, is there somebody on the loose, do they have weapons, what's going on?" she said.

Rockford Police say Troy Neal was speeding and when they tried stopping him, they say Neal refused. Investigators say Neal drove into the grass at Wesleyan Park causing serious damage to his car, but it wasn't enough to stop him. The car broke down about a half a mile later at Ohio Parkway and Constance Drive.

On Friday night just a few blocks away on 23rd street a woman was carjacked. Four teenagers were arrested for that crime.

"The police seem to be doing their job and catching these people, so we're okay with that," Vecchione said.

Neal is charged with fleeing and driving on a revoked license among other charges.

Vecchione says cars being stolen from the southeast side neighborhood is still the biggest concern. However, she says she's seen a stepped up police presence in the area over the last few months.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- A Rockford man is arrested on a number of charges after police say he sped away from them, even driving up over a curb to get away.

Rockford Police say officers say they noticed a car driving at a high speed near Broadway and 23rd Street around 9:00 p.m. Sunday.

When officers tried to stop the vehicle near 21st Avenue and 25th Street, they say the driver kept going. At one point, the car drove up over a curb at Wesleyan Park, damaging the vehicle.

The driver eventually stopped at Ohio Parkway and Constance Avenue. That's when 28-year-old Troy Neal from Rockford was arrested.

Neal has been charged with Aggravated Fleeing to Elude, Revoked Driver's License, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident and Stop Sign Violation.
