ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Mercyhealth Hospital says patients were diverted to other hospitals during flooding Monday night.

The hospital says the diversion was part of its emergency protocol. Staff focused on clean-up in the hospital's basement and new patients were admitted starting just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

“Patient safety has guided every decision Mercyhealth has and will continue to make,” said Javon R. Bea, Mercyhealth President and CEO. “Mercyhealth staff continues to work around the clock with specialized cleaning crews to remove any standing water and prevent any further damage to the basement of the facility.”

Hospital officials say water did get to part of the pharmacy which was immediately relocated. It has since resumed operating from its normal location.

The hospital is looking at the causes of the flooding and working to prevent it in the future.
