UPDATE: Police say man who jumped into Rock River is alive

UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Rockford Park District Police say they have credible information that the man who jumped into the Rock River Wednesday afternoon is "alive and well", but not in custody.

That's according to an email from the Rockford Park District.

Authorities continue to follow leads in this investigation.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Rescue crews are still searching for a man they say ran into the Rock River to avoid police.

Rockford Fire was called to the scene just before 2:00 Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say an officer spotted a man near the Rockford Library. The officer later learned the man was wanted on a warrant for probation violation. When the officer told the man he was wanted, the man is said to have taken off towards the river.

Crews have been searching for the man for two hours.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockford Fire is on the scene of a water rescue at State Street and the Rock River.

According to investigators, crews are looking for someone who reportedly jumped into the river Wednesday afternoon. Officials tell us they believe the person may be wanted on a warrant.
