ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) — Schools can sometimes be the life blood of a Catholic parish, and that’s why families from three different local parishes packed the Boylan High School auditorium to offer ideas on how to combat decreasing enrollment numbers.
Tonight’s meeting was focussed on families from St. Bernadette, St. James, and St. Peter Cathedral. The three schools are within two and a half miles of each other and all with enrollment of 155 students or less.
The eleven county Rockford Diocese ran the meeting to discuss their faith forward strategic plan.
These three schools were identified as candidates for collaboration or consolidation due to their proximity, competition for the same demographic, and overall financial conditions.
No decisions were made at tonight’s meeting. The Diocese hosted a similar meeting in Aurora last month and will be hosting a planning session in Elgin in April.
