OREGON, Ill. (WIFR) - Ogle County is now moving forward with design and construction plans for its new jail after the county board votes to approve the hiring of a construction manager.
Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Company will oversee the multi-million dollar project. Gilbane has more than 47 offices around the United States, the closest in Chicago.
The company was recently involved with the renovation and construction of the DeKalb County courthouse in 2012.
Company officials say they are focused on safety and minimizing the disruption to surrounding neighbors.
"The key is that it's in a neighborhood where there are residential homes, there are businesses. So it's going to be a priority for us to make sure that we minimize disruption to those businesses and those homes. That's one of the first things we looked at," said Senior Public Sector Manager Derek Ward.
The board has approved issuing bonds not to exceed $28 million for the project. Groundbreaking of the new 180-bed jail will likely take place this fall.
