NAACP Freedom Awards handed out

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Striving to make the community a better place comes with rewards.

The NAACP Rockford branch recognized community leaders for their hard work and dedication at its annual award ceremony at the Radisson Hotel.

This year's keynote speaker was Jacqui Patterson. She's the Climate Justice Initiative Director for the NAACP.

Former president Lloyd Johnston was honored for his work helping to bridge the gap between the community and police.

"We all have a responsibility to seek out face, and tell the truth about why we have social, economic, educational, political disparities today and work on solutions to get things changed so we can live up to the constitution, Johnston said.

The NAACP honored five people with the Freedom, business, community service, unsung hero, and youth awards.
