ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Many people of the Sikh faith all over the world and right here in the Stateline celebrated a religious tolerance day on Sunday by remembering and honoring a Sikh prophet.

Nearly 100 people stopped by the Sikh temple this afternoon to celebrate the martyrdom day of the 9th prophet of the Sikh community. Many honor the 9th prophet because he sacrificed himself for the Hindu faith when an emperor was forcefully converting Hindu people to Islam hundreds of years ago. Members of the temple hope those who took time to remember the prophet will honor the faith like he did.

"They are happy and they will promise here today just to spread the message of peace and harmony and live like a family, international brotherhood,” said the president of the Sikh Temple, Baba Ji.

Members of the temple say this religious tolerance day is very important in the Sikh faith and is celebrated all over the world.
