Meals on Wheels faces cut in federal funding

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A program that feeds many of our parents and grandparents may take another hit in funding.

Meals on Wheels is a critical lifeline for about 150 people each day in our area, served by Lifescape Community Services. A federal budget proposal would cut $3 billion from Community Development Block Grants that pay for programs like Meals on Wheels.

Lifescape Community Services, which has also been impacted by the state budget impasse, says losing that federal funding would be devastating.

"Our drivers have saved people's lives by checking on them, seeing them on the floor, connecting them with loved ones. It's not just about the food, the food is really important, but it's also about that daily contact, checking in on them, seeing if they need anything, and making sure they're okay,” Mike Hughes, Executive Director of Lifescape Community Services, said.

Lifescape says right now the hardest part is not knowing what is going to happen to funding on either the state or federal level.
